Navigation & Maps

Rogaining

A navigation sport where participants plan their own route to visit checkpoints and collect points within a time limit. Usually team-based, with events ranging from a few hours to 24 hours or longer.

Unlike orienteering, checkpoints can be visited in any order, and each is worth points. Teams decide which to chase and how to get back before the time limit, so route planning matters as much as speed.

In the wild

"We had six hours, so we skipped the far checkpoints and planned a loop that got us back with ten minutes to spare."

Why it matters

Rogaining teaches route planning, pacing and teamwork, which are all useful on your own off-track hikes.

Safety: Longer events can cross remote terrain. Choose an event and course length that suits your experience and follow the organiser's safety rules.

Rex's tip: Being late back costs points. Plan your return before you get greedy.

Grab a friend, grab a map and see how many checkpoints you can find. Shorter events and metrogaines can be a great introduction.
