A note on reported incidents

The Search & Rescue dataset is compiled from news reports, not from an official incident register. It should be treated as indicative rather than complete:

  • only incidents that were reported publicly appear here
  • well-known parks are more likely to be reported than remote areas
  • some reports cannot be matched to a canonical park and are left out

Putting Visitation in Context

Compare reported incidents with visitor estimates from the same period.

How the per-100,000-visits rate works

Reported incidents are divided by that park's visitor estimate for the same period, then multiplied by 100,000. Parks with very small visitor numbers can therefore show a high rate from only one or two reported incidents, so read the rate alongside the raw counts.
