White Cliffs Heritage Trail
White Cliffs, NSW
Self-guided outback town and opal-field walk from the Paroo-Darling Visitor Centre past dugouts, solar history and pioneer sites.
About this place
White Cliffs, about 255 km north-east of Broken Hill, is Australia's first commercial opal field (1880s) and is famous for underground dugout homes. A marked heritage walking trail of about 4 km starts at the Paroo-Darling Visitor Centre on Keraro Road (opposite the general store and White Cliffs Hotel), with parking and toilets beside the centre. Interpretive stops typically include dugouts and Smith's Hill, the solar power station site, Opal Pioneer Federation Park and the pioneer children's cemetery. Best May-November. Combine with Peery Lake in nearby Paroo-Darling National Park (about 33 km).
