West Head army track
Northern Beaches, NSW
Steep historic track with ladders down West Head's eastern face to a WWII army battery above Broken Bay.
About this place
This 450m one-way track follows the route WWII soldiers used to supply West Head battery, which guarded Broken Bay with two 4.7-inch ex-naval guns, an observation post, ammunition stores and searchlights. Some sections are so steep you climb ladders — use three points of contact and face the ladder. Return the same way through casuarina forest favoured by glossy black-cockatoos. Guided battery tours via Kalkari Discovery Centre (02) 9472 9300. Allow 1–1.5 hours return. OSM West Head Lookout start: 33.57914°S 151.30924°E.
