Warrumbungle National Park Dark Sky Park
Warrumbungles, NSW
Australia's first accredited International Dark Sky Park — volcanic silhouettes under some of the darkest skies in the country.
About this place
Warrumbungle National Park became Australia's first International Dark Sky Park in 2016 thanks to high altitude, low humidity and strict lighting controls around Coonabarabran. After dark the Milky Way stands out above the Breadknife and surrounding spires; the visitor centre sells star charts and is the meeting point for NPWS ranger-led Explore the Dark Sky tours using 8-inch Dobsonian telescopes. You can also stargaze independently from campgrounds inside the park boundary — bring red-light torches and follow the park's lighting guide.
Access & getting there
Visitor centre 9 am-4 pm daily, closed Christmas Day. Park entry $8 per vehicle per day. Ranger dark-sky tours must be booked; remaining 2026 dates are listed on the NPWS site. DIY stargazing is free with park entry.
