Tomaree Head Summit walk
Port Stephens, NSW
A short, steep 2.2 km return to 161 m above the heads of Port Stephens, with WWII guns and island views.
About this place
Tomaree Head Summit walk is the must-do hike at Port Stephens: 2.2 km return from Zenith Beach carpark, graded as a challenging short climb to 161 m. From the top you look across Shoal Bay, Fingal Island and Point Stephens Lighthouse to Cabbage Tree and Boondelbah islands — the world's only nesting sites for Gould's petrel. WWII gun emplacements remain on the summit. Allow 1.5-2 hours and bring water; the stone and steel stairs are steep. It also forms the northern end of the longer Tomaree Coastal Walk.
Access & getting there
Park at upper or lower Zenith Beach carpark (fees may apply; busy in holidays). No park entry fee for the walk itself.
Zenith Beach carpark, Shoal Bay Rd, Shoal Bay NSW 2315, Tomaree National Park
Safety notes
Steep drop-offs at the summit. Carry water and take rest breaks on the stairs. Track can close in extreme weather.
Gear notes
Grippy shoes, water and sun protection. Binoculars for whales (May-November) and islands.
