Thornleigh Oval (Great North Walk trailhead)
Berowra Valley National Park, NSW
A named Great North Walk trailhead — the Benowie track leaves Hornsby streets here and drops into Berowra Valley.
About this place
Thornleigh Oval on Handley Avenue is one of the signed urban trailheads where the Great North Walk quits the northern suburbs and enters Berowra Valley National Park on the Benowie walking track. NPWS lists Pennant Hills, Westleigh and Hornsby among the places you can join the 27km Berowra Valley section; this oval is the practical Thornleigh/Westleigh start for a day walk north toward Timbarra track, Fishponds and Galston Gorge, or south toward Lane Cove National Park. Train to Thornleigh station, then a short street walk to the oval. The rifle-range diversion via Manor Road sits north of here — follow GNW markers, not shortcuts through closed land.
Access & getting there
Train to Thornleigh (Northern line / Central Coast line). Street parking around Handley Avenue. Follow Great North Walk markers into Berowra Valley. No through access at Hornsby Rifle Range further north.
Thornleigh Oval, Handley Avenue, Thornleigh NSW 2120
Safety notes
Once in the valley, treat it as a proper bushwalk — water, map, and a turnaround time. Respect rifle-range closures.
Gear notes
Full day-walk kit if heading into Berowra Valley. Opal card if you plan a one-way walk to another station.
