Smoky Cape Lighthouse
North Coast, NSW
James Barnet's octagonal 1891 light on a 128 m granite headland in Hat Head National Park — NSW's highest coastal light.
About this place
Smoky Cape Lighthouse sits on the headland Cook named in 1770, east of South West Rocks inside Hat Head National Park. The octagonal mass-concrete tower is one of Barnet's last major lights; its focal plane at 128 m is the highest in NSW, and the original Chance Bros lens still turns. Walk Heart Attack Hill from the carpark, watch whales from the cape, and stay in the heritage keepers' cottages if you book NPWS accommodation. The lightstation precinct is a State Heritage site; check alerts as the walking track sometimes closes for upgrades.
Access & getting there
Park below and walk up the steep path to the precinct. NPWS has offered lighthouse tours since 1998; cottages are bookable. Confirm local alerts for track works.

Safety notes
Steep climb and unfenced cliffs. Stay on paths. The headland is exposed in southerly gales.
Gear notes
Water and a hat for the climb. Binoculars for whales and Fish Rock offshore.
