Porcupine walk

Snowy Mountains, NSW

A 5.7 km return family walk from Perisher Valley Reservoir to Porcupine Rocks, with Main Range and Thredbo Valley views.

About this place

NPWS describes Porcupine walk as a 5.7 km return track (1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes) from the Perisher Valley reservoir carpark in Kosciuszko National Park. The formed track follows Rock Creek then climbs through woodland into the alpine zone around 1900 m, finishing at the granite outcrop of Porcupine Rocks. Views take in the Main Range, Thredbo River Valley and Bullocks Flat. Open to walkers in summer; in winter it is a snowshoe and cross-country ski trail (part of the Perisher Range ski trails). NPWS warns that climbing the rocks themselves is dangerous: they can shift, may be slippery, and there is a sheer drop. Stay on the formed track.

Access & getting there

From Jindabyne drive 33 km along Kosciuszko Road to Perisher Valley. Take the first left after the Man from Snowy River Hotel, then first right to the gravel reservoir carpark. Overflow parking at the main Perisher carpark near the NPWS visitor centre, then 700 m walk. Kosciuszko Road is closed between Perisher and Charlotte Pass in winter. Park entry fees apply. No dogs.
