Newnes Industrial Ruins walk
Lithgow, NSW
2.5 km walk among shale-oil coke ovens, the Big Wall and Australia's largest beehive kilns at Newnes.
About this place
NPWS Newnes Industrial Ruins walk is 2.5 km, 1.5-2.5 hours, through the old Wolgan shale-oil works: coke ovens, brick kilns, paraffin sheds and the 15 m Big Wall. Beehive kilns here are the largest of their type in Australia. Do not climb ruins; they are unstable and there are hidden holes off-track. Because Wolgan Road has collapsed, reaching Newnes is currently a long walk-in from Glen Davis. Add about 1 km each way if you rock-hop the Wolgan River to the ruins carpark.
Access & getting there
Treat Newnes as walk-in until Lithgow Council reopens Wolgan Road. NPWS still describes a 4WD river crossing near the old Newnes Hotel when the road is open. Check current alerts. No dogs.
