Nettleton's First Shaft Lookout

Lightning Ridge, NSW

Green Car Door Tour lookout on Lightning Ridge's McDonalds Six Mile — western horizon sunsets and a historic hand-dug shaft.

About this place

Nettleton's First Shaft Lookout sits on the McDonalds Six Mile opal field at the end of Lightning Ridge's Green Car Door Explorer route. Lightning Ridge Historical Society describes an uninterrupted western horizon used for sunset year-round, and a rectangular hand-dug mineshaft monument to Charlie Nettleton, founder of the black-opal industry. The area was registered with the Australian Heritage Commission in 1992. Stay behind barriers; opal fields are working mines. Pair with town fossicking areas; this is not a national park walk.

Access & getting there

Follow the Green Car Door tourist route west of town onto the Six Mile field. Unsealed field tracks; drive slowly and stay on the marked tourist road. Never walk into mine shafts or onto active claims. Maps from Lightning Ridge Visitor Information.
