Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve

North Coast, NSW

Giidany Miirlarl — a short clifftop walk from Coffs Harbour marina to the Eastern lookout over a wedge-tailed shearwater rookery and the Solitary Islands.

About this place

Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve, Giidany Miirlarl, is the seabird island at the end of Coffs Harbour's northern breakwall. It is one of the few easily reached wedge-tailed shearwater (muttonbird) rookeries in NSW and an important Gumbaynggirr place. A formed walking track leads from the marina carpark to the Eastern Side lookout with Solitary Islands views — a top whale-watch in season. Stay on the track; nesting burrows collapse if you leave it. NPWS offers a self-guided Island Sanctuary audio tour in the app, and Gumbaynggirr-led Muttonbirds by Moonlight tours when scheduled.

Access & getting there

Walk from the marina / jetty carpark along the breakwall onto the island. No vehicles on the island. Stay on formed tracks to protect burrows.
