Mrs Macquaries Chair
Sydney Harbour, NSW
The sandstone bench carved in 1810 — still the best free seat for Opera House, Bridge and Farm Cove in one view.
About this place
Convicts cut this sandstone bench on Yurong Point in 1810 for Elizabeth Macquarie. The peninsula is now the eastern end of the Royal Botanic Garden, and the chair still faces north-east across the harbour. Walk the Domain loop or come at sunrise before the tour buses. It is a landmark, not a long hike — give it 30 minutes, or fold it into a Botanic Garden morning. The inscribed Mrs Macquarie's Road stone is just above the seat.
Access & getting there
Walk through the Royal Botanic Garden or along Mrs Macquaries Road from the Art Gallery. Limited paid parking. Free during garden hours.

Safety notes
Unfenced harbour edge. Busy with visitors at sunrise and sunset. Watch your footing on sandstone.
