Mount Wood Summit walking track
Corner Country, NSW
A short, tough 3 km return climb to cone-shaped Mount Wood over Sturt’s gibber plains.
About this place
NPWS calls Mount Wood a cone standing tall among gibber plains — one of the most inhospitable landscapes in Australia. The 3 km return summit walk is relatively short but quite challenging (3.5–4.5 hours, Grade 5). From the top you look over wind-scoured stone plains, with eagles and kestrels overhead. Bandicoots and hare-wallabies inhabit the country; do not underestimate heat or isolation.
Access & getting there
Unsealed/4WD park roads; check Jump-Up and Middle Road alerts. Park entry $8. No water. Tibooburra is the last reliable fuel.
