Mount Kosciuszko Summit
Snowy Mountains, NSW
The roof of Australia — a hike to the highest peak on the continent at 2,228m above sea level in the Snowy Mountains.
About this place
Standing at 2,228m, Mount Kosciuszko is Australia's highest peak and a true bucket-list hike. There are two main routes: the classic 18.6km return walk from Charlotte Pass, and a shorter 13km return via the Thredbo chairlift (summer only). The summit sits above the treeline in a fragile alpine landscape of wildflowers, heath, and glacial lakes. The walk follows a boardwalk for much of the route to protect the ecosystem. Start early — afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer.
Access & getting there
National Parks entry fee applies. Standard hiking access is summer only (Dec-Apr). In winter, summit area is ski touring terrain only. Thredbo chairlift runs in summer for a shorter route.
