Barunguba Montague Island

South Coast, NSW

A wildlife island nature reserve 9 km off Narooma — seals, seabirds, a historic lighthouse and NPWS-guided boat access only.

About this place

Barunguba / Montague Island is an 81-hectare nature reserve about 9 km southeast of Narooma, the largest inshore island in NSW after Lord Howe. Little penguins, Australian fur seals and seabirds share the granite with a heritage lighthouse precinct you can day-trip or overnight in. The island is closed to independent visits: access is only via NPWS-contracted commercial vessels from Narooma wharf, with a minimum visitor age of 5. Book through Eurobodalla operators; transfers often leave around midday. This is a privilege visit, not a casual hop.

Access & getting there

Island closed except on booked commercial tours. Minimum age 5 years. Contact NPWS Narooma (02 4476 0800) or eurobodalla.com.au for operators. Seas can cancel trips.

Transfers from Narooma wharf, Bluewater Dr, Narooma NSW 2546

Safety notes

Rough crossings possible. Follow guide instructions around wildlife and cliffs. Tours will not run in poor sea state.

Gear notes

Windproof jacket, motion-sickness precaution, and closed shoes for granite paths.
