Main Range Walk
Snowy Mountains, NSW
A 22 km alpine loop from Charlotte Pass past Blue Lake to Mount Kosciuszko and back.
About this place
NPWS lists Main Range walk as a 22 km loop (7 to 9 hours) from Charlotte Pass across glacier-carved high country: Snowy River stepping stones, Hedley Tarn, Blue Lake, Carruthers Peak, then the Main Range to Mount Kosciuszko (2228 m) and return via the Summit trail and Seamans Hut. Snowbound June to October with no snow poles; Kosciuszko Road closes between Perisher and Charlotte Pass in winter. Steel mesh platforms protect alpine plants and can be sharp; running is not recommended. Park entry fees apply. This is a full loop, not the summit-only walk from Thredbo.
Access & getting there
Summer: drive Kosciuszko Road to Charlotte Pass (road closed Perisher to Charlotte Pass June to October long weekends). Do not start if Snowy River stepping stones are covered. Alpine weather changes fast.
