Main Range Ski Touring
Snowy Mountains, NSW
Unmarked Kosciuszko backcountry from Charlotte Pass, Guthega and Thredbo across Australia's highest peaks.
About this place
NPWS notes that Main Range walk is snowbound June to October: you may ski or snowshoe, but there are no snow poles. Kosciuszko Road is closed Perisher to Charlotte Pass, so winter access is oversnow from Perisher or via Guthega and Thredbo tops. Classic tours include Charlotte Pass to Carruthers Peak, the old summit road to Seamans Hut and Rawson Pass, and spring skiing of the Western Faces. This is real alpine touring - ice, whiteout and river crossings - not in-bounds resort skiing.
Access & getting there
Winter: no public cars to Charlotte Pass; oversnow from Perisher (book) or skin from Guthega or Thredbo. Spring: road to Charlotte Pass often reopens and is the easiest trailhead. Park entry fees. Experienced parties only.
Charlotte Pass, Guthega or Thredbo top station, Kosciuszko National Park
