Kiandra heritage precinct
Snowy Mountains, NSW
Birthplace of Australian skiing and a short-lived 1860 gold town on the Snowy Mountains Highway; precinct open, historic buildings still fire-closed.
About this place
Kiandra heritage precinct sits on the Snowy Mountains Highway in the Selwyn area of Kosciuszko National Park. NSW Government lists the address as 8950 Snowy Mountains Highway, Kiandra NSW 2629. It was the site of Australia's 1859-61 gold rush (peak population around 8000 in April 1860) and the birthplace of organised snow skiing in Australia. The 2020 Dunns Road fire destroyed remaining timber buildings including the courthouse/chalet, Wolgal Lodge and Pattinsons Cottage. NPWS states the precinct is open but all precinct buildings remain closed due to severe fire damage. The Kiandra heritage track has reopened after fire damage, with some infrastructure still awaiting maintenance. Reconstruction of Wolgal Lodge and Pattinsons Cottage has been tendered. Access point for the Australian Alps Walking Track.
