Kiama Blowhole
Illawarra, NSW
The world's largest blowhole — a 2.5m rock vent that can throw spray 25 metres when a south-easterly swell is running.
About this place
Kiama Blowhole has been pulling people to this headland since George Bass noted it in 1797. Waves compress through a cavern and explode out of a 2.5-metre opening; in the right swell the plume is spectacular, in a flat sea it sulks. Accessible viewing platforms sit on Blowhole Point a short walk from Kiama station. There is a rock pool, picnic area and visitor centre next door. Best on a windy day with south-east swell — that is when the sea makes the noise the town is named for.
Access & getting there
Short walk from Kiama railway station. Free. Accessible viewing platforms. Visitor information centre on the point.
Blowhole Point Rd, Kiama NSW 2533
Safety notes
Stay behind barriers. Unexpected waves wash the rock shelf. Do not climb down toward the vent.
Gear notes
A rain jacket if the swell is up — spray soaks the platforms.
