Jenolan Caves
Blue Mountains, NSW
The world's oldest dated open cave system, currently closed, with public reopening planned for early 2027.
About this place
Jenolan Caves (Jenolan Karst Conservation Reserve) is a UNESCO Greater Blue Mountains site west of Katoomba: more than 40 km of passages, 300 entrances and eleven LED-lit show caves, often dated among the world's oldest open cave systems (about 340 million years). The Grand Arch, Blue Lake and heritage Caves House sit in a steep valley. Official sites updated in 2026 state the reserve is closed for Two Mile Road repairs and precinct upgrades, with planned reopening in early 2027. Do not attempt access via Six Foot Track.
Access & getting there
CLOSED to the public through 2026; Jenolan Caves Reserve Trust advises early 2027 reopening. NPWS: entire karst reserve including walking tracks closed. No Six Foot Track access. Future visits will likely use shuttle from a new top-of-Two-Mile carpark rather than driving the Two Mile.
Jenolan Caves Road, Jenolan NSW 2790
Safety notes
Do not enter the closed reserve or damaged road. When open, stay with guided tours in show caves unless on a booked adventure trip.
Gear notes
Warm layer underground when tours resume. Sturdy shoes.
