Hungry Gate campground
Mid North Coast, NSW
Back-to-basics Hat Head camping — 20 sites a 10-minute walk from the beach, reached via a gravel road and ford.
About this place
Hungry Gate campground is a small Hat Head National Park camp south of the village. NPWS lists 20 sites for tents and trailers, a 10-minute walk from the beach, with a back-to-basics feel. Access is 3km of gravel and a concrete ford that floods after heavy rain and may need AWD/4WD then. From Hat Head, turn onto Gap Road just before the bridge and follow signs. Bring all drinking water. Book online. A quieter Hat Head extra than the lighthouse precinct.
Access & getting there
From Kempsey take South West Rocks Road to Kinchela, then Hat Head Road. Just before the bridge turn right onto Gap Road, first right, then signs to Hungry Gate. 3km gravel and a concrete ford; AWD/4WD after heavy rain. 2WD in dry weather.
