Hanging Rock Blackheath
Blue Mountains, NSW
Detached sandstone tower below Baltzer Lookout, famous in photos and strictly a look-do-not-jump landmark.
About this place
Hanging Rock is a huge overhanging sandstone block, more than 100 m high, that has detached from Burramoko Head and juts into the Grose Valley. It is reached only after the Burramoko Ridge trail to Baltzer Lookout, then a steep informal descent. NPWS treats the lookout and rock as the same unfenced clifftop precinct. Standing on the rock means jumping a gap above a fatal drop; it is not a formed attraction and is not recommended.
Access & getting there
Same access as Burramoko Ridge trail. No fenced platform or signposted scramble onto the rock. No dogs. Wilderness group limit of 8.
Via Burramoko Fire Trail and Baltzer Lookout, Ridgewell Road, Blackheath NSW 2785
Safety notes
Do not jump onto Hanging Rock. A slip is fatal. Not a family or beginner objective.
Gear notes
Sturdy shoes with grip, water, wind layer.
