Fingal Bay Beach
Port Stephens, NSW
A 1.9 km semi-circular bay at Port Stephens' eastern edge, backed by Tomaree National Park and the famous Fingal Spit.
About this place
Fingal Bay is a sandy arc between Fingal Head and Point Stephens, with the township on the western shore and Tomaree National Park wrapping the rest. The 1.9 km beach is a swimming and walking favourite; the spit that sometimes links the mainland to Fingal Island is notorious — people have died crossing it as waves cover the sand at high tide. Stay on the bay beach, watch Point Stephens Lighthouse from shore, and link to the Tomaree Coastal Walk toward Shoal Bay or One Mile. Port Stephens Coaches serve the suburb from Newcastle.
Access & getting there
Village parking is limited in peak season. Do not attempt to walk Fingal Spit to the island.
Marine Drive, Fingal Bay NSW 2315
Safety notes
Do not cross Fingal Spit — it is covered by breaking waves at high tide and has caused fatalities. Swim at patrolled times if flags are up; otherwise treat as unpatrolled.
