Dead Horse Gap walking track
Snowy Mountains, NSW
A 5 km one-way alpine walk between Thredbo's Kosciuszko Express and Dead Horse Gap on Alpine Way, with Ramshead Range views.
About this place
NSW National Parks lists Dead Horse Gap walking track as a 5 km one-way walk (1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes) in the Thredbo-Perisher area of Kosciuszko National Park. The signposted route forms part of the Australian Alps Walking Track and can be walked in either direction: start from Dead Horse Gap on Alpine Way, or from just beyond the top of Thredbo's Kosciuszko Express chairlift (chairlift fares apply). It crosses snow-gum forest, herbfields and alpine heath with views to the Ramshead Range, Crackenback Mountain and the Thredbo Valley. NPWS rates it Grade 4; the climb from Alpine Way is steep. The track is open to walkers between the October and June long weekends; winter travel is snowshoe or ski only, with no snow poles marking the route. Combine with Thredbo River track if returning to the village.
