Cathedral Rocks
Illawarra, NSW
Sculpted sea stacks and folded rock platforms at Kiama Downs, a short hop north of the Blowhole on the Kiama Coast Walk.
About this place
Cathedral Rocks is the cluster of sea stacks and tessellated rock platforms off Kiama Downs, north of already-listed Kiama Blowhole. It is a photography and geology stop on the Kiama Coast Walk rather than a swim (swell wraps the stacks). Access is from the coastal path near Bombo / Kiama Downs; Bombo Headland's old basalt quarry is immediately south and equally photogenic. Go at low tide for the platform detail, and keep well back in big swell — people have been washed off these rocks.
Access & getting there
Park at Kiama Downs / Bombo headland carparks and walk the coastal path. Best in calmer swell and lower tides.
Kiama Coast Walk, Kiama Downs NSW 2533 (Cathedral Rocks)
Safety notes
Rock fishing and platform danger. Large swell washes over the stacks. Stay off wet rocks in onshore swell. No swimming among the stacks.
Gear notes
Camera, sturdy shoes, windproof layer.
