Cathedral Rock track
New England, NSW
A 6 km New England circuit that finishes with a scramble up 200 m of stacked granite to a tablelands throne.
About this place
Cathedral Rock track starts at Barokee campground, 70 km east of Armidale on Waterfall Way, and loops 6 km through sub-alpine woodland of banksia and manna gum. A 400 m side path then rock-hops to the summit of Cathedral Rock — a stack of granite boulders with views across the New England Tablelands toward Round Mountain (1,584 m). NPWS describes the circuit as exciting and challenging; the rocks can be slippery and crevices are deep, so agility is required. Do it at sunrise or sunset if you can handle the extra chill.
Access & getting there
Turn off Waterfall Way onto Round Mountain Road, then 8 km of narrow gravel to Barokee. 2WD in the dry; take care after rain.
Barokee campground, Round Mountain Rd, Cathedral Rock National Park (off Waterfall Way, 5 km west of Ebor)
Safety notes
Summit boulders are slippery when wet. Deep crevices. Weather on the tablelands can turn quickly — carry a warm layer.
Gear notes
Grippy footwear essential for the scramble. Raincoat and extra layer even in summer.
