Cape St George Lighthouse ruins
Jervis Bay, NSW
The wrongly sited 1860 lighthouse in Booderee National Park — sandstone ruins, whale watching and a cautionary tale of 23 nearby wrecks.
About this place
Cape St George Lighthouse was built in 1860 on the wrong headland south of Jervis Bay's entrance and deactivated after Point Perpendicular Light took over in 1899. The tower was later demolished so it would not confuse shipping; sandstone ruins remain on Old Lighthouse Road in Booderee National Park (Jervis Bay Territory). The Commonwealth Heritage List protects the site. It is a stark lookout for whales and a reminder of 23 wrecks on this coast while the light stood in the wrong place.
Access & getting there
Enter Booderee National Park (vehicle pass required) via Jervis Bay Road, then Stony Creek Road to the ruins. Unsealed sections. Park at the signed car park and walk to the ruins.
