Cape Byron Lighthouse

Byron Bay, NSW

Australia's most powerful lighthouse on the mainland's easternmost headland — whale watchers' lookout above Wategos.

About this place

Cape Byron Light (1901) stands on Walgun, the easternmost point of mainland Australia, with a 2.2 million candela beam and a first-order Henry-Lepaute lens still turning on its mercury float. The precinct includes a maritime museum in the former keeper's office, lawns for watching humpbacks, and joint management with Arakwal people. You can drive or walk the Cape Byron track; tower tours run most days except Christmas. Come at sunrise if you can beat the parking cap, or walk from town and stay for the sweep of Tallow Beach to the south.
