Broulee Island Nature Reserve
South Coast, NSW
42 ha tombolo island off Broulee, a 4 km return shoreline walk across a sandbar for rock pools, littoral rainforest and oystercatchers.
About this place
NPWS Broulee Island Nature Reserve (created 1972, 42 ha) is joined to the mainland by a sand tombolo at Broulee Head. NSW Government describes a 4 km return, moderate, 1-2 hour walk beginning south of North Broulee Beach or from Broulee Surf Club via Shark Bay. The island has littoral rainforest and bangalay sand forest, superb fairy-wrens, white-bellied sea eagles, and threatened pied and sooty oystercatchers. There are no formal tracks on the vegetated top; most people circuit the shoreline and rock platforms at low tide. Camping is not permitted. Dogs are prohibited on the island, beaches and rock platforms. Pink Rocks on the north side is a known surf break.
