Broughton Island walking tracks

Port Stephens, NSW

A boat-access network of short Grade 3 tracks on Broughton Island in Myall Lakes National Park — Providence Beach, Coal Shaft Bay and a seabird colony camp.

About this place

Broughton Island sits offshore from Port Stephens inside Myall Lakes National Park. NPWS walking tracks total about 2 km return (Grade 3, 40–45 minutes of walking, plus boat time). Most visitors land at Esmeralda Cove. Tracks lead 250 m to the five-site campground at Little Poverty Beach, 300 m west to Coal Shaft Bay lookout, and 500 m north to Providence Beach. It is the only place in NSW where you can camp in an active seabird colony. Boat only (about 45–60 minutes from Port Stephens). Book campsites before you go; no water, no power, little shade. Use boot-washing stations.

Access & getting there

Vessel access only. Commercial transfers operate from Port Stephens (e.g. Salty Pilgrims). Private vessels: register with Marine Rescue Port Stephens. Camping only in the five booked sites. Take all rubbish out.
