Australia Rock
South Coast, NSW
Hole in Narooma's chert headland that resembles the map of Australia, reached by stairs from Bar Rock Lookout above the southern breakwall.
About this place
NSW Government lists Bar Rock Lookout and Australia Rock on Bar Rock Road, Narooma NSW 2546. The lookout takes in the breakwalls, Barunguba Montague Island, Bar Beach and Wagonga Inlet. A steep staircase drops to the southern breakwall and a hole in the rockface known as Australia Rock, which from the right angle looks like the mainland without Tasmania. Explanations range from natural erosion of the Narooma Accretionary Complex to chains from a moored ship wearing the hole. Fur seals often haul out on the breakwall. Free entry, carpark on site. This is the mainland landmark, not the Montague Island tour.
Access & getting there
Drive to Bar Rock Lookout at the end of Bar Rock Road. Stairs down to Australia Rock and the breakwall are steep. Free. Seals on the rocks - keep your distance.
