About this event

Katoomba to Wentworth Falls: 20km (elevation 1500m+) Difficulty: Hard due to the elevation and rugged nature of the track Weather: If there is heavy rain on Friday/Saturday and predicted forecast rain on Sunday, I will change to an alternate trail as this is not safe in wet weather. Transport: 6:24am train from Central, arriving Katoomba at 8:25. (Check timetable regularly as this service has a history of last minute surprises) Details: Lindeman Pass was designed to connect Katoomba with Wentworth Falls at a similar elevation as Federal Pass and National Pass. It is a rugged, beautiful trail with stunning vistas, views and features. Sadly, although the trail was all but completed in the early 1900’s (except for the last 200 meters), it was never finished and never formally opened. Katoomba council had voted against opening it, concerned customers would literally walk away to neighboring towns. Some one hundred years later, the Pass is still there but unmaintained, largely unmarked and only trodden on by the brave few willing to negotiate it. Some of the trail is still in reasonable condition, but there have been landslides and erosion over the years that make it a challenge to follow. (See track here: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/map-39027df–34?u=m ) This is a HARD walk: 1500m+ of total ascent with a few steep climbs, a few rock scrambles, some bush bashing, slippery terrain and the possibility of Larry the leech. The hardest part may be staying on the trail, and there’s a real possibility we’ll need to backtrace our way out or use one of the three alternate exits along the route. What to bring: Min 2.5 liters water and 500ml electrolyte drink Sturdy, broken in shoes (ideally trail runners or hiking boots) Lunch and snacks Hat and sunscreen Lightweight rain jacket Packable warm clothes (ideally lightweight fleece) Walking/trekking poles (recommended) Headlight of flashlight (optional, just in case) Recommend wearing long pants, long socks or gaiters IMPORTANT NOTES: – You are responsible for looking after your own health and safety.
