Outdoor Data API · Coming soon

Build something for the outdoors.

Hikezilla is opening up its data, tools and infrastructure for people building useful things for the outdoor community.

Apps, maps, visualisations, experiments, open-source tools — if you've got an idea, we'd like to help you build it.

Data

Build with outdoor data

Explore outdoor datasets brought together from government, research, community and other sources.

Tools

Use the Hikezilla Workspace

Active project contributors can request access to shared tools for planning, development, data, design, automation and content production.

People

Don't build alone

Turn an idea into a Hikezilla Project, find contributors and build something that gives back to the outdoor community.

Outdoor Data API

Coming soon

Outdoor data is everywhere.
We're trying to make it easier to use.

Hikezilla brings together datasets from government, research, community and other sources, while keeping their original attribution and provenance. We're building a common API so outdoor projects don't have to start from scratch every time.

200+

outdoor datasets brought together in Hikezilla — a growing catalogue.

One place. Data from everywhere.

Building something about the Blue Mountains shouldn't mean finding and integrating a dozen different data portals first.

Hikezilla's geography layer connects datasets to common places, so a project can discover what information is available for a park, region or other outdoor place.

Planned API

  • /v1/datasetsDiscover available data
  • /v1/datasets/{id}Understand a dataset
  • /v1/places/{id}/datasetsFind data connected to a place
  • /v1/insights/{id}/dataUse a published analysis

Product direction only — these endpoints aren't live and may change.

Provenance

Sources stay sources.

Hikezilla doesn't erase where data came from. Data retains its source, publisher, licensing and provenance information so builders can understand what they're actually using.

Individual datasets may have different licences, attribution requirements and usage restrictions. Those conditions still apply when data is accessed through Hikezilla.

What could you build?

The API isn't the project. It's something to build projects with.

Trail accessibility map

Combine trails, facilities and accessibility information into something people can actually use.

Snow conditions explorer

Turn historical snow and weather records into an interactive explorer.

Outdoor infrastructure finder

Help people discover facilities such as toilets, campsites, huts and other outdoor infrastructure.

Conservation visualisation

Explore biodiversity and environmental information geographically.

Race explorer

Build tools around trail-running events, routes and results.

Something we haven't thought of

Probably the interesting one.

Ideas only — these aren't existing Hikezilla products.

Hikezilla Workspace

Good ideas shouldn't get stuck because you don't have the tools.

People actively working on relevant Hikezilla Projects can request access to Hikezilla's shared workspace. Depending on availability, this can include advanced, Pro or Business access to tools for planning, development, data, design, automation and content production.

Hikezilla has access to shared seats across a collection of professional tools. Rather than leave available seats unused, we're making them available to active project contributors where we can.

You build it. You own it.

Hikezilla does not claim ownership of your project or its intellectual property because you've used Hikezilla's workspace, data or tools. We're providing infrastructure to help useful outdoor ideas get built.

Individual datasets, APIs and third-party tools may have their own licences or terms, which still apply.

Access is subject to available seats and the terms of each provider. Tools, plans and availability may change. Hikezilla is not affiliated with or endorsed by these providers unless explicitly stated. Workspace access is provided for project-related use; if you stop contributing or no longer need a tool, we may recycle the seat for another contributor.

Build it in the open.

We want useful outdoor ideas to be shared, improved and built on — not disappear when one person gets busy.

Hikezilla encourages technical projects to work openly where practical, document what they've learned and make it possible for other people to contribute.

Not building software?

Neither are half the people in Projects.

A Hikezilla Project might be a documentary, research project, recipe book, trail initiative, photography project, set of patches, an app — whatever.

This page is simply the technical corner of that workshop.

Have an idea? Here's how it works.

  1. 1

    Have an idea

Start your own Project or find one that interests you.

  2. 2

    Find people

Invite contributors or join people already building something.

  3. 3

    Get what you need

Request access to relevant workspace tools and available data.

  4. 4

    Build

Tell us what you're thinking of building. It'll help us work out what the first version actually needs.

Got an idea?

Start a Project. Find some people. Borrow the tools you need. Build the thing.

Your project stays yours. Hikezilla doesn't take ownership of projects created through the community, nor do we claim your intellectual property because you've used Hikezilla's workspace, data or tools. Third-party software terms, source dataset licences, API terms, other parties' copyright and any contributor agreements within individual projects still apply.
