Commemorate the ANZs
Blue Mountains
Hike to Splendour Rock to pay your respects at the bushwalkers' war memorial plaque.
The expedition
Splendour Rock is one of the most spectacular spots to camp overnight in the Blue Mountains. Located in a remote area, it offers a serene escape from the crowds. Wake up to a breathtaking sunrise that makes the journey worthwhile.
At Splendour Rock, you’ll find a plaque commemorating bushwalkers who lost their lives in World War II, placed near the logbook. Each year, a dawn service is held here on ANZAC Day. To avoid overcrowding, you can complete this challenge at any time, but attending the service is a moving experience you’re welcome to join!
Location & Access
Splendour Rock is located at the southern end of Mount Dingo in the Wild Dog Mountains, part of the Blue Mountains National Park. It is a remote location typically requiring a multi-day hike or a long, strenuous day trip from Dunphy's Campground.
Memorial Significance
The site is home to the Bushwalkers' War Memorial. The plaque was unveiled in 1948 to honor those members of NSW walking clubs who served and died in WWII. It remains a sacred site for the hiking community.
Tips for Completion
- The terrain is rugged and navigation skills are required.
- While you can complete this at any time, the dawn service on ANZAC Day is a traditional way to experience the site.
- Please respect the area as a memorial and follow Leave No Trace principles.
